Seven Eight Drumming

7/8 seems to be everyone’s favorite odd time signature. You hear it all the time in genres such as progressive rock and fusion, but also in pop (Sting, anyone?) and some mainstream rock. A 7/8 passage can be sort of like a spice to add to your arrangement when you want to be perceived as intelligent. Other musicians in the audience raise an eyebrow and give you a subtle nod of approval.

Odd time signatures are also very hard to program if you want them to sound like a real drummer. And that’s why these loops are recorded live by professional drummer Magnus Brandell. We haven’t quantized anything which means that you’ll get drum loops that sound alive, organic and realistic. You want perfectly lined up 16th-notes? Get a drum machine.
